Permission Denied / Can't Access Feature
If you're seeing "Permission Denied" or can't access a feature, it's usually a role issue.
Check Your Role
- Go to Settings
- Find Your Role (should be listed on your profile)
- Check Roles & Permissions to see what your role can do
Your role determines what you can access:
- Employee — Can see own goals only
- Manager — Can see direct reports' goals + own
- Admin — Can see everything + manage settings
Common Permission Issues
"I can't see my team's goals"
You need: Manager or Admin role
Solution:
- Ask your admin to promote you to Manager
- Or log in as an admin and check that they're listed as your direct reports
"I can't access the Audit Log"
You need: Manager or Admin role
Solution:
- Ask your admin to promote you to Manager (managers can view their team's audit log)
- Or ask an Admin to check the full audit log for you
"I can't change someone's role"
You need: Admin role (or Manager role for limited changes)
Solution:
- Ask your workspace Admin to make the change
- Or ask to be promoted to Admin if you need to manage users
"I can't invite people"
You need: Manager or Admin role
Solution:
- Ask your admin to promote you to Manager
- Managers and above can invite new people
"I can't access workspace settings"
You need: Admin role
Solution:
- Ask your Admin to manage settings for you
- Or ask to be promoted to Admin if you manage the workspace
Request a Role Change
If you need a higher role:
- Ask your admin — "Can you promote me to Manager/Admin? Here's why I need it: [reason]"
- Be specific about why — "I need to see my team's goals" or "I need to manage workspace settings"
- Provide context — Admins are more likely to promote you if they understand the need
After Role Change
After you're promoted:
- Refresh the page — Press F5 (Windows) or Cmd+R (Mac)
- Log out and log back in — For the new permissions to fully take effect
- Check sidebar — New menu items should appear (e.g., Audit Log for managers)
Troubleshooting
I was promoted but still can't access the feature
- Refresh the page (F5)
- Log out and log back in
- Close your browser and reopen it
- Try a different browser
My admin says they promoted me, but I still don't see it
- Wait 5 minutes (system may need time to update)
- Refresh the page
- Log out and log back in
I think I should have access but don't
- Contact your Admin
- Tell them what feature you're trying to access
- They can check your permissions and fix it
Security & Why Roles Matter
Roles limit access for security reasons:
- Employees shouldn't see other people's goals (privacy)
- Managers should only see their direct reports (data access control)
- Admins have full access but should be few in number (separation of duties)
If you don't have access to something, it's usually by design.
